Wiltshire is a largely rural county famous for Stonehenge, Salisbury Plain and the Avebury stone circle. Swindon in the north is the largest town — a former railway hub with a mix of Victorian terraces and modern estates with generally good road access. Salisbury is a cathedral city with medieval streets near the close and a river valley setting. Chippenham and Trowbridge are market towns on the Bristol-Bath fringe. Devizes and Marlborough are attractive towns with period properties. Much of central Wiltshire is military training land (Salisbury Plain) with scattered villages. The M4 crosses the north (Swindon area) and the A303 runs east-west through the south. Wiltshire does not have a Clean Air Zone.
