Cambridgeshire moving challenges

Cambridgeshire is dominated by its two very different cities. Cambridge is a world-famous university city with medieval colleges, narrow streets, extensive cycling infrastructure and some of the most restricted vehicle access in England — the city centre is largely closed to cars during the day. Student moves peak heavily in June and September. Peterborough is a Cathedral city with a New Town feel — flat, grid-like and much easier for van access. Huntingdon and St Neots are market towns on the A1 corridor. Ely is a small city with a magnificent cathedral and a mix of period and modern housing. The Fens in the north of the county are flat, open and rural. The A14, A1(M) and M11 all cross Cambridgeshire. Cambridge does not currently have a Clean Air Zone but has an experimental traffic regulation order restricting city-centre access.

Medieval university city, New Town cathedral and Fenland villages

A move from a Cambridge college nearby house is different to a Peterborough estate home, an Ely cathedral-close cottage, a Huntingdon period property or a Wisbech Fenland house. The contrast between Cambridge's access restrictions and Peterborough's easy roads is extreme.

FAQ

Cambridgeshire man and van questions

How much does a man and van cost in Cambridgeshire?
Cambridgeshire moves start from £19 per hour. Cambridge is the most expensive area due to access restrictions and high demand. Peterborough is significantly more affordable. A 3-bed house move in Cambridge typically costs £300–£550, while Peterborough could be £280–£480.
Can a van access Cambridge city centre?
Cambridge city centre has restricted vehicle access during the day (typically 10am–4pm) via a traffic regulation order. Most residential areas outside the core are accessible. Mention your exact postcode so the mover can plan the route and timing.
When is the busiest time for Cambridge student moves?
Cambridge has a unique pattern. University terms end in June, and many student houses turn over in September. June and September are peak months. Book early — Cambridge's access restrictions mean limited time slots.
